Environmental Care
Reducing our CO2 footprint, downsizing energy consumption and limiting our waste is a core part of our sustainability commitment and initiatives.

Tailored Waste-Disposal Concepts
We ensure that the treatment and disposal of all our waste materials is conducted according to international standards and conforms to the local regulations. We carefully select our partners for waste transportation and treatment based on our in-house selection criteria towards performance and capabilities. Furthermore, we ensure that waste that is generated is valorised maximally and gets a second life.

Best available techniques are applied at Aji Bio-Pharma
With our focus on volatile organic compounds (VOC), as precursors to low atmospheric ozone and low NOx, this image is an example of state-of-the-art technique applied at one of the Aji Bio-Pharma sites: a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) with rotating distributor. The RTO provides enhanced air treatment possibilities, less maintenance, less compressed air consumption, and overall a more stable process by having less pressure difference between the RTO and the manufacturing units.
Two outcomes, one commitment.
As the Bio-Pharma Services business within Ajinomoto Co., our work supports the Group’s enterprise-wide Vision for 2030 — connected by the purpose of contributing to the well-being of people, society, and the planet.

Reducing Consumption
As part of the global industrial community, we are engaged in selecting and implementing energy-efficient solutions, and this from the moment of procuring and engineering until the day by day usage of our most important energy sources (natural gas and electricity).
Industrial Water
Our Belgium site has installed a 10.000 m³ rainwater collector which aims to reduce the amount of groundwater use on a yearly basis by 10%. Further studies have been kicked off to explore the usage of river water in some of the manufacturing processes to replace groundwater.
Cooling Water
Across our sites, sustainable initiatives have commenced to ensure water can be recovered and re-used. For example, we are looking to recover rejected USP-grade water and air handler condensate, to be used in the cooling of the sites.
Sustainability Working Groups
To oversee our sustainability initiatives, the company has employed cross-functional sustainability working groups at each site. These groups are made up of internal and external subject matter experts as well as volunteers.
Energy Efficiency
Energy consumed for manufacturing processes is by far the largest contributor to our climate-relevant emissions. We concentrate on energy-efficiency measures at all our manufacturing sites as part of our continuous improvement effort.
Carbon Emissions
CO2 For the calculation of our CO2 footprint we use the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) protocol as a reference. The Scope 1 & 2 calculations for each manufacturing site have been verified and are available, further efforts are ongoing towards the Scope 3 calculations.
Renewable Energy
All Aji Bio-Pharma sites have begun investing in green electricity to reduce our environmental impact, in the meantime, the Belgian sites made the switch to 100% green electricity with a goal of utilizing 100% renewable energy by end of 2050.
